Imagine starting a fitness empire from your bedroom at just 19. That’s exactly what Ben Francis did when he created Gymshark, now a mega-success in the fitness apparel world. So this is a guy who knows a thing or two about building a business when you’re young.
And in a recent YouTube video Ben hit up a Prince’s Trust event in London with the intention of sharing a bit of this knowledge and offering a bit of guidance to other young business owners. See, the Prince’s Trust is brilliant at helping youngsters turn their big ideas into reality, and this was the perfect spot for Ben to drop some wisdom.
At the event, Ben got chatting with a former personal trainer who switched gears during the lockdowns, moving from training to selling fitness gear. During the chat Ben got real about how hard it’s been growing Gymshark to where it is today, sharing that there’ve been plenty of days when they didn’t make a single sale.
He pointed out that the toughest part of having a business isn’t just growing it, but keeping things steady. You have to stick with it through all the times that you have an awesome day and think you’ve cracked it, just to then have weeks of nothing.
His advice to anyone in the process of building a business? Keep at it, even when it’s tough. “I always say that one sale a day, so seven sales a week, is better than like 15 on one day, nothing on the other six,” Ben advises. It’s all about that slow and steady pace.
