BOXD Protein Honest Review: Is It Better Nutrition For Women?

In a world of supplements and protein powders it was interesting to see a brand do something purely women focussed which is what BOXD have done. Promising tailor made supplements to suit the nutritional needs of women. But is it any good? We found out!

BOXD Protein

Boxd protein is a new premium protein product, focused solely on nutrition for the female body. The brand is mission-driven – set up by two passionate founders (both men!), driven by an admirable set of core values: Diversity in the women we represent, evidence based in the nutritional information we provide, and sustainable in our materials and processes.

My first impression? I adore the product. When it comes to nutrition, quality of ingredients and gorgeous aesthetics, I can’t fault it. For me the taste and texture didn’t deliver like some of their rivals but with a little tinkering of the amount of water or milk alternative needed it certainly became a product that I could use again.

BOXD Protein

Boxd Protein is a female-focused protein powder which offers supercharged shakes containing no nasties and a precise blend of 16 vitamins and minerals designed to help women feel their best.

The company claims that their unique blend of iron, vitamins B, C and D, flaxseeds and electrolytes boosts energy levels and promotes a healthy immune system, alongside adding strength to hair, skin and nails. The shakes are also free from soy, gluten and contain no added-sugars – which can all be detrimental to wellbeing.

What really sets the company apart is its mission to make healthy nutrition simple for women of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds, whilst fighting diet culture and keeping their environmental footprint small through the use of recyclable and degradable materials. Whether your goal is fitness based, or you just want a healthy dose of nutrition, they want to help you achieve this in a convenient and sustainable way.

Boxd Protein sells both whey and vegan protein blends (pea and white hemp), which both currently come in a choice of two flavours: Madagascan vanilla or double chocolate brownie.

The Verdict

On the first try, I mixed the product in my shaker with 300 ml of cold water, as suggested by the brand. I was impressed that the protein blended well however, despite a pleasant chocolate flavour, it tasted a little watery, had a chalky texture and wasn’t particularly sweet.

I decided to have another go, this time using less liquid and a plant-based milk. With 200ml of oat milk the second shake was a marked improvement on the first, with a much richer and creamier taste. A slightly earthy taste, similar to many – but not all, GHOST’s offering is a pretty decent attempt – other pea proteins I’ve tried. It also had a notable tinge of natural sweetener, which is fairly common where stevia is included without any sucralose to mask the aftertaste (although I totally understand why they would avoid this, being an artificial ingredient whose effect on microbial health is up for debate).

That being said, I do love the design of the product, the brand’s ethos and admire the effort they’ve put into creating a premium product packed full of high-quality, healthy ingredients. Therefore, I would definitely be open to trying other products in the range, especially their whey as I admittedly would not typically opt for vegan proteins and generally less likely to enjoy this type of shake.

TL;DR

  • Taste: 7/10
  • Texture: 6/10
  • Nutrition: 9/10

Overall: 7.3/10

Do I love the story behind the brand? Yes. The gorgeous packaging? Yes. The quality of the ingredients? Yes.

Would I buy their plant-based protein again? Yes! I am looking forward to trying the Vanilla flavour and following their cookie dough recipe!
