The latest news in the boxing scene saw Conor McGregor come under scrutiny for going into rehab for alcohol and substance abuse. Former MMA fighter Chael Sonnen commented on last week’s cancelled UFC 303 match between McGregor and Michael Chandler, stating sarcastically that both fighters ‘have these massive interests in alcohol,’ and that McGregor was ‘in the middle of rehab.’
McGregor’s camp has cleared the air on the situation, stating that the reason for the match cancellation was an injury he picked during training. His media spokesperson Karen Kessler also told TMZ that the fighter is looking forward to a new date.
Sonnen made his rehab claims while on his ESPN show with Daniel Cormier. The wild nature of the theory left co-host Cormier quite stunned on the Good Guy/ Bad Guy show, as he drew the conversation back to the UFC. The ex-MMA fighter is known for concocting such theories with nothing factual to support them.
For his part, Conor McGregor has been with his family, recently celebrating Father’s day with his long-term partner Dee Devlin and their four kids. He had earlier posted his take on the cancelled match, stating that it was ‘very tough to be ruled out of his scheduled return bout.’
Michael Chandler, on the other hand, has decided to wait for McGregor’s return, even though the UFC 303 cancellation came as a big blow to Chandler. Sonnen’s take on Chandler’s wait was equally cutting. ‘People definitely want to see him fight but he doesn’t have anyone that comes remotely close to having the drama and the steam of Conor McGregor…I say wait just a bit longer.
