Just when you thought the MMA world couldn’t get any more intense, Colby Covington just found himself in hot water after his “miserable” night against Leon Edwards recently at UFC 296 in Las Vegas.
The trash-talking American star had stirred the pot leading up to the fight with his controversial comments about Edwards’ late father, raising eyebrows and tempers alike. Covington didn’t mince words, promising to bring his opponent “to the seventh layer of hell” and cracked a particularly tasteless joke about Edwards’ dad. Needless to say, the fight between the pair was pretty tense!
But when it came time to back up his pre-fight antics, Covington fell short, losing to Edwards via unanimous decision with a 49-46 verdict on every judge’s scorecard. It was quite a humbling experience for ‘Chaos,’ and it didn’t go unnoticed by his fellow UFC fighters.
UFC lightweight star Michael Chandler wasted no time in delivering a scathing remark, saying, “If Colby’s offense tonight was an accurate depiction of the U.S. strength, we would have never gotten our independence from Britain, lost WWI and got demoralized in WWII by a landslide. Colby, you suck.”
As for the fight itself, Leon Edwards put on a masterful performance, completely outclassing Covington. Edwards controlled the championship bout with precision, showing excellent Octagon control and landing leg kicks that left Covington bruised. Round after round, Edwards maintained his measured approach, frustrating the challenger who fought cautiously.
Despite Covington securing a takedown in the third round, Edwards swiftly got back to his feet and secured his own takedown. He remained technical and controlled throughout, winning by unanimous decision.
An emotional Edwards spoke to Joe Rogan after the fight, addressing Covington’s crass taunts, saying, “This guy used my dad’s death for entertainment, he used my dad’s murder as entertainment.” Edwards clearly had a point to make during the match, and he definitely did it in style.
With this win, ‘Rocky’ improves his professional record to 22-3 (1) and now boasts two UFC title defenses. As for Colby Covington, it’s another loss in a UFC title fight, with two previous defeats against former champion Kamaru Usman.
So, in the end, it was a night of intense emotions, tough words, and a dominant display of skill by Leon Edwards that left Colby Covington with plenty of critics to answer to. MMA, where drama and skill collide!
