Breakfast, commonly dubbed as the ‘most important meal of the day’ is definitely my favourite but arguably the hardest meal to stay on track with. What’s the easiest food item that can constitute as a ‘meal’? Cereal.
Whoever invented cereal deserves a knighthood because that stuff is sublime, so many varieties, always satisfying and can really be eaten at any time of the day. The first issue is that it’s hard to find a cereal that tastes good and doesn’t contain a truckload of sugar, in addition to the struggle of finding a cereal that allows you to hit your macros, like protein.
Now there are some ‘protein’ cereals out there like Weetabix (exciting) and there are some forms of protein granola but other than that you have to start venturing onto protein cereal bars. The gap in the market for high protein, low sugar, low calorie cereal is striking; yet healthy cereal brand Surreal might have slipped into that gap comfortably.
Healthy Cereal Brand Surreal
‘Surreally Healthy Cereal‘ is how they brand themselves and the abundance of 5-star reviews seem to back that up. A quick look on their website will tell you all you need to know: low carb, high protein, low sugar. Compared to your bog-standard supermarket cereals (per bowl) you’re getting:

5g net carbs vs 28g net carbs
13g protein vs 1.6g protein

So, there is absolutely no disputing the fact that it is a lot better for you, not to mention that protein is music to your stomach (that is if you’re a gym goer and set yourself daily targets…)
Surreal Flavours
Now, I know you’re sat there thinking it can’t get any better but, oh, it can! The flavour choices are broader and more exciting than you’d expect for this type of product. I know we’ve all chosen a protein bar that literally tastes like nothing but we endure it for the ‘gainz’, well thankfully you don’t need to compromise like this with Surreal because they have 4 fantastic flavours; Cocoa, Cinnamon, Frosted and Peanut Butter, yeah, peanut butter, wild eh! For me this is what sets healthy cereal brand Surreal apart, there’s nothing a like a bowl of chocolate cereal after dinner and now I can do this guilt free!
Surreal Review
Whilst we’re here let me give you my personal run down of each flavour, yes I have basically had 4 bowls of cereal today, but that’s what you call extensive research people, someone has to do it!
Cinnamon 7.5/10 – I love cinnamon so this one was easy for me to enjoy, I know it’s not for everyone so obviously if you don’t typically like cinnamon you might not feel the same but having said that the flavour isn’t overpowering, it’s sort of a sweet toast kind of flavour (if that makes any sense).
Frosted 8/10 – If you want a simple, sugary sweet taste this flavour is for you, instead of grabbing the Frosties, go for these.
Peanut Butter 7.5/10 – This one is niche, a peanut butter cereal, who’d have thought it? Not me! Again, like cinnamon it won’t be for everyone but it was for me, very different and very nice.
Cocoa 9.5/10 – Definitely my favourite, there’s next to no difference in flavour to a ‘normal’ chocolate cereal and that is the beauty of it, same flavour as what you’re used to but considerably healthier, it’s a no brainer.
How Much Does Surreal Cereal Cost?
It’s worth noting that Surreal sells their product in a really cool way, you buy them in cases, which is 4 boxes and it’ll set you back £24. Considering the price of some cereals these days, I don’t think this is bad at all, we’ve all spent a lot of money on protein products and you need not to look at this as cereal, but as a protein rich meal. It works out cheaper than a protein shake at just 66p per delicious bowl which is also 1/4 the price of a Huel RTD shake.
You can buy each flavour in a case or buy a variety pack where you get 1 box of each flavour, this would be my recommendation first so you can try each one and maybe determine a favourite to order next time. They also have a nice subscribe and save feature which will see you save 10% and allows you to choose between a 4/6/8 week repeat delivery, very clever!
Oh, and for all you packaging nerds out there, the best-looking cereal boxes you’ll ever see, that’s a fact (I’m passionate, can you tell?). They take pride of place on top of my fridge for everyone to see their multi-coloured glory.
