The staple breakfast food of my childhood, a bowl of sugar-laden cereal will forever hold a special place in my heart. From frosted flakes to fruit loops, I could quite happily eat the stuff for breakfast, lunch and dinner (and, given I’m currently at uni, know plenty of people who do!).
However, we all know that being high in sugar and refined grains, cereal’s nutritional profile is far from ideal. Fortunately, brands like Surreal are shaking up the game with their innovative high protein, low carb spin on Britain’s favourite breakfast; changing cereal from a ‘naughty’, cheat-day snack to a nourishing and satisfying meal.
Surreal
At Surreal, they want to know ‘why?’ Why is the sky blue? Why must cereal either be a sugar overload or taste like a squirrel’s winter stash? Why can’t it be tasty AND good for you?
Whilst the first question isn’t necessarily relevant (and pretty hard to build a business around!), Surreal has found the ‘breakfast holy grail’ and solved the final two. Their cereal is a great way to fuel your body first thing, providing a healthy and delicious start to your day. The entire range is high in protein, low carb and contains ZERO sugar, whilst still being satisfyingly sweet and super crunchy too!
They’re on a mission to make every day a little bit more playful and have also made a commitment to promoting:
- Healthy bodies – making the cereal you love nutritionally relevant for today.
- Healthy minds – because there’s more than enough stuff to worry about in the present day.
- A healthy planet – by becoming a B corp and removing plastic packaging to reduce waste.
So why choose Surreal over standard cereal? Well, for starters the brand is super cool but the cereal comes with some pretty great benefits too. They include:
- It’s packed with plant-based protein (containing 12-13g per serving – equivalent to 2 whole eggs!)
- It’s low in carbs, and calories and completely sugar-free
- It’s full of fibre and contains prebiotics in the form of inulin, which is great for gut health

The Verdict
Having read the rave reviews online, it’s fair to say I was looking forward to trying Surreal and just a *little* excited for my delivery.
Even the packaging is designed to make you smile, with a colourful, retro theme that immediately evokes a sense of childhood nostalgia that takes me straight back to the ‘00s. I couldn’t wait to give it a try and was also incredible curious – considering that Surreal describes itself as ‘cereal made without cereal’ – to see how it would taste?
Well, I can tell you that it’s good – surrrreal good!
Joking aside, I was really impressed. All 4 flavours taste fab, each little crunchy hoop coated in a dusting of sweetness which perfectly captures the flavour that’s described. The frosted loops are innocent and sweet, whilst the cocoa one has a richer, dark chocolate vibe. The peanut butter one does what it says on the tin and my favourite, cinnamon, is a delicious combination of sugar and spice.
Whilst the recommended serving size of 30g is more filling than you think, I reckon most adults could do with 45g – coming in at around 20g protein for less than 200 kCal, it’s essentially identical to the average protein bar.
