The Specialist Insurance That All Personal Trainers Need

Being a personal trainer is hard work. Long days in the gym followed by hours spent programming and creating plans for clients is by no means an easy feat. We know that filling out piles of paperwork is the last thing you want to do when you’re ready to settle down for the evening. However, just because you’re self-employed doesn’t mean your exempt from the mundane tasks of filling taxes and taking out insurance.

As a personal trainer, it’s critical to protect yourself and your clients (by taking out specialist insurance against a range of incidents. Without it, you could end up getting fined huge sums of money, severely out of pocket or even have your professional reputation compromised.

That’s why we’ve created this simple guide to insurance for PTs, in collaboration with Insure4Sport, providing an overview of the different types of cover available and recommending which ones you should buy:

Public Liability Insurance

Public liability insurance is potentially the most important cover of all since it protects your legal liability if a claim is made against you for injury to another person or property damage.

For example, if you were training a client and they damaged a piece of equipment at the gym you were training in you could be held responsible and forced to pay for its replacement. This could end up costing ££££’s!

Luckily, Insure4Sport offers personal trainers specialist Public Liability insurance policy at the best possible price.

Personal trainers can choose from the following insurance levels, which include a 30% introductory discount for new customers:

  • £1 million of cover from £4.12 per month
  • £2 million of cover from £4.50 per month
  • £5 million of cover from £4.87 per month
  • £10 million of cover from £5.62 per month

Professional Indemnity Insurance

If you provide advice to clients, you should also consider taking out professional indemnity insurance. This would cover your legal liability if a client claimed against you after, say,  suffering an injury as a result of an exercise you’d advised.

Personal Accident Insurance

Whilst you may associate insurance with protecting yourself against claims from other people, its equally important in cases where you suffer injuries whilst training as these could ultimately keep you out of work for long periods of time. Personal accident insurance can cover the cost of various types of treatment you require for your injuries, from physiotherapy to dental appointments. It also includes compensation if you were (and we really hope you don’t!) to suffer accidental death, permanent disablement, loss of limbs or loss of sight.

Insure4Sport’s personal accident insurance packages also offers optional loss of earnings cover of up to £750 a week for up to 52 weeks, to provide additional financial support.

It costs as little as £1.13 a month for up to £10,000 of cover, rising to £1.88 a month for £50,000 of cover, which includes a 10% introductory discount for new customers.

Sports Equipment Insurance

Sports equipment insurance protects your equipment against loss, theft or damage. If any of these occur, this type of insurance means you wouldn’t have to pay for replacements out of pocket or cover the cost of repair. What’s more, if the equipment’s less than a year old, you’ll receive a brand new piece free-of-charge.

Insure4Sport offers unlimited Sports Equipment insurance, with a maximum single item value of £2,500. Costs vary – please see company website for further details.

Employers’ Liability Insurance

If you have other personal trainers working for you, it’s a legal requirement to have employers’ liability insurance since, if one of your employee’s gets injured, you could end up with a compensation claim, regardless of whether the incident took place on or off-site. Having this type of insurance protects you against claims like these and means you wouldn’t be faced with a costly pay-out.
