Social media and the internet has been thrown into a frenzy following the recent WBC rankings especially in the heavyweight division. Many boxing fans are surprised by Tyson Fury’s WBC heavyweight rankings as he no longer holds the number one spot.
Tyson Fury, the former WBC champion, slipped to the number two spot, while his long-time rival Anthony Joshua snags the number one position. This news comes after Tyson Fury’s fierce but unsuccessful challenge against in their undisputed heavyweight title clash back in May. Losing the fight meant surrendering his WBC belt, and now Fury finds himself back in the challenger’s queue.
Beyond the top two, the rankings this year are quite impressive. Agit Kabayel, has earned a well-deserved spot at number three with Zhilei Zhang also climbing the ladder, landing at number four after his powerful knockout win over Deontay Wilder. Efe Ajagba, the current holder of the WBC “silver” trinket belt, strengthens his position at number five.
The rankings continue with Jared Anderson at number six, followed by Martin Bakole and Kabayel’s former rival, Frank Sanchez, at seven and eight respectively. Veteran Joe Joyce maintains his place in the top ten at number nine, while rising star Bakhodir Jalolov rounds out the list at number ten. Fabio Wardley, the current British champion, sits just outside the top ten at number eleven.
Anthony Joshua, despite suffering two defeats to Usyk himself, has managed to climb the rankings ladder thanks to his impressive recent wins over top fighters like Francis Ngannou and Otto Wallin. AJ’s win coupled with Fury’s loss, has shot him to the forefront of the heavyweight division. With the IBF title currently vacant, there’s a chance Joshua might even face Daniel Dubois for that belt in September.
Although dethroned, Tyson Fury will undoubtedly be aiming for a swift return to the top and reclaim his lost title.
