Step Aside Doritos – We Put The Curators’ New Protein Crisps to the Test

Taste Testing The Curators’ Latest Protein Crisps – Here’s What We Thought

Crisps have always been my kryptonite. I can swerve a doughnut. Say no to a brownie. Even look a chocolate bar square in the foil and walk away. But crisps? No chance.

There’s just something so incredibly savoury about them – so irresistibly moreish. Problem is, when you’re keeping a constant close eye on macros, traditional crisps aren’t exactly team-friendly.

At least they weren’t, until now. Better-for-you snack fanatics The Curators have just dropped a new nibble designed to scratch the crisp itch and hit you right in the gains.

Dubbed Protein Chips, these Doritos-shaped beauties deliver a fraction of the calories with a supercharged protein punch.

Naturally, I had to put them to the test. I grabbed myself a mixed multipack using code GYMFLUENCERSAGENCY for 20% off and impatiently waited for their arrival.

Are these the protein crisps we’ve all been waiting for? Let’s find out.

The Curators’ Protein Crisps: The Macros

Before we take a deep dive into whether these protein crisps live up to the hype, let’s start with the key details. The Curators’ Protein Chips come in 35g bags and two classic flavours: Tangy Cheese and Thai Sweet Chilli.

The macros vary ever so slightly depending on the flavour, so let’s map them both out:

Tangy Cheese

  • Protein: 10g
  • Fat: 4g (0.5g of which saturates)
  • Carbs: 16g (1.5g of which sugars)
  • Dietary Fibre: 2.6g
  • Calories: 147

Thai Sweet Chilli

  • Protein: 10g
  • Fat: 4g (0.4g of which saturates)
  • Carbs: 16g (2.1g of which sugars)
  • Dietary Fibre: 2.7g
  • Calories: 148

Honestly? I’ve absolutely no complaint about the macros at all. Compared to a smaller (30g) serving of Doritos, The Curators’ offering has almost half the fat, a decent amount more fibre, and more than five times the protein.

Speaking of protein, that 10g punch is thanks to a lentil and soy protein concentrate base – also making these protein crisps veggie-friendly, or vegan if you opt for the Thai Sweet Chilli flavour. I’m neither of those things, but I’ve got nothing against a bit of inclusivity.

The Taste Test

The macros were always going to be better than your bog-standard crisps – that’s a given. What’s not such a banker is whether they can match the taste.

Because here’s the thing: if the flavour doesn’t draw your hand back to the bag for more, even the most macro-friendly snack won’t stop you wandering back to the cupboard for something else. Protein crisps or not, they’ve got to deliver on crunch, flavour, and that deeply satisfying salty hit.

Tangy Cheese

I started with the Tangy Cheese – a bold move, considering cheese-flavoured anything can go one of two ways: deliciously rich or slightly synthetic. Luckily, this one lands firmly in the former camp.

It’s punchy without being overwhelming, with a satisfying, paprika-forward tang that actually reminded me a lot of classic Doritos. Nowhere near as greasy, not as salty, but it’s got that same addictive quality.

The texture? Surprisingly crisp. These aren’t chewy or cardboardy like some protein crisps I’ve tried before. They’re thin, super light, and break with a decent snap – more tortilla-style than puffed, which I guess is why they call them chips.

Thai Sweet Chilli

Next up was Thai Sweet Chilli. I was expecting something more subtle, but this one’s got a real zing to it. Think sweet upfront, followed by a warming chilli heat that creeps in at the back. It’s a moreish, flavour-layered crisp that holds its own – and honestly, if you blindfolded me, I’d never guess it was a high-protein product.

The Verdict

All in all, I was properly impressed. Both flavours delivered the hit I wanted without the guilt I didn’t. The texture was light, the crunch was satisfying, and the protein content means I can slot them into my day without needing to ‘earn’ the snack with a workout or trade off another meal.

Would I swap out my usual crisps for these full-time? Without doubt. Especially during a cut, when every macro counts but cravings still come knocking.

And at around 150 calories a bag with 10g of protein, they’re a no-brainer cupboard staple for anyone looking to upgrade their snacking game.

Final Thoughts on These Protein Crisps

The Curators have done exactly what they set out to do: take an everyday snack and level it up with better nutrition, better ingredients, and none of that weird, artificial aftertaste you sometimes get with health-focused alternatives.

They’ve proved that protein crisps don’t have to taste like punishment.

At £23.99 for a 20-bag multipack, they’re pricier than your average bite – but then again, protein isn’t ever cheap. You get what you pay for, and this is a crisp with benefits. Gains, even.

Would I buy them again? Absolutely. Will I be keeping them within arm’s reach on my next Netflix binge? Already there.
