If you’ve been asking yourself (and Google) ‘what is HYROX?’ after hearing the word a lot lately then you’re in the right place to find the answers you’ve been looking for!
The fitness world has gone absolutely mad for HYROX. Almost overnight, social media is flooded with sweaty people—often topless—putting themselves through physical torture in the name of fun.
HYROX has become the new marathon—either everyone’s doing one, or everyone’s talking about wanting to do one. But the key question is: Just what is HYROX?
Well, that’s exactly what we’ll be answering for you today.
What is HYROX?
HYROX is an international fitness phenomenon that fuses functional fitness and endurance in a unique race format. Participants run 1 km, followed by a functional workout station—repeated eight times. That’s right, eight times.
In competitions, the eight stations tend to consist of:
– 1,000m SkiErg
– 50m Sled Push
– 50m Sled Pull
– 80m Burpee Broad Jumps
– 1,000m Rowing
– 200m Farmers Carry
– 100m Sandbag Lunges
– 100 Wall Balls
That sounds like a lot—and it is—but HYROX offers different formats that allow fitness enthusiasts to share the workload.
In the Doubles format, contestants run together but split the workout stations, taking turns to offer words of encouragement while catching their breath.
Relay, ideal for gyms and corporate events, involves a team of four completing 2 km and two stations each.
For most people, the HYROX Open is the most popular choice. Anyone can sign up and take on the race solo in a You vs. You style challenge.
There’s also a Pro division for elite athletes, but that might be something to aim for once you’ve found your feet in HYROX.
