Getting enough protein each day is key to making gains and getting the results you want from the hard work you’re putting in at the gym, and protein shakes are an awesome, convenient way to boost your intake without too much effort.
They’re easy to prepare, versatile, and generally pretty tasty, and a really accessible way for everyone from pro athletes to fitness newbies to hit their protein intake goals. There aren’t really that many negatives to including them in your diet, but one thing that some people do notice is that their skin starts to break out after they start drinking them.
So, do protein shakes cause acne? It’s a question that loads of people have asked over the years and one that YouTuber Joe Frazer set out to answer in one of his latest videos.
The simple answer is that, yes, protein shakes can cause acne in some people. It’s all down to the high levels of whey protein that lots of shakes contain, which has been linked to increased sebum production and inflammation, both of which can contribute to acne.
If you do find it’s an issue for you then you might want to switch your whey protein to a vegan alternative. In the meantime, check out Joe’s video to find out the results of his personal experiment to see the effect of whey protein shakes on his mates’ skin.
