Matt Morsia Shows How to Build a High Protein Diet on a Budget

Matt Morsia has built a huge online following by sharing everything from workouts and food challenges to family life and the occasional completely ridiculous fitness experiment.

These days he’s also known to a lot of people as Legend from Gladiators, but YouTube is still where fans get the best look at how he trains, eats, and approaches fitness day to day.

And in a recent video, Matt Morsia set out to prove that eating well and getting enough protein doesn’t have to cost a fortune. His challenge was to build a full week of healthy, high protein meals for less than £35, with the final plan working out at just £4.93 a day.

Matt Morsia takes on the weekly shop

Matt headed to Aldi with a strict shopping list and a budget that didn’t leave him much wiggle room, so how did he get on?

Well, his trolley included beef and pork mince, eggs, tuna, Greek yoghurt, kidney beans, and mozzarella, along with oats, potatoes, rice cakes, fruit, vegetables, and chopped tomatoes.

The whole shop came to £34.53, which works out at £4.93 per day.

And looking at the amount of food he managed to get for that price, that’s pretty impressive.

What was on the menu?

Breakfast was a big bowl of oats with Greek yoghurt, chopped apple, and cinnamon. It came to around 700 calories and gave him 40g of protein.

Lunch was a four egg omelette with mozzarella, adding another 34g of protein.

Then, for dinner, Matt Morsia made a jacket potato topped with chilli using beef and pork mince, kidney beans, and chopped tomatoes. That meal came in at around 820 calories and 48g of protein.

There were snacks too, including tuna and mayonnaise on rice cakes, a pear, and another bowl of Greek yoghurt. So, this definitely wasn’t one of those meal plans where you spend the entire day waiting for dinner.

Once everything was added up, the day came to around 2,700 calories and 175g of protein, while also covering five portions of fruit and vegetables.

High protein without the huge food bill

The main point Matt Morsia wanted to make was that eating a healthy, high protein diet doesn’t always need to cost a fortune.

He kept the ingredients simple, bought larger packs where they offered better value, and used the same foods across several meals rather than filling the trolley with expensive extras.

Of course, the exact cost will depend on where you shop and how many calories you need each day. But the meals can easily be made smaller or scaled up, and there’s room to add different seasonings or swap in similar ingredients.

Matt Morsia managed to put together a full week of filling meals for £34.53, with enough protein to support his training too.

So, if your weekly food shop has started getting out of hand, his video shows that a bit of planning can make a seriously big difference.
