The ‘Life-Changing’ Figure Paid To Maxx Chewning In The Sour Strips Candy Hershey Acquisition Has Been Revealed.
Hershey has released its annual report for 2024, and we now know how much the American confectionery giant paid to acquire Sour Strips.
Sour Strips was founded in 2019 by YouTube star Maxx Chewning as a way to bring “sour candy that doesn’t suck” to the masses.
Armed with its signature angry fruit characters, bold flavors, and the backing of the fitness community, Sour Strips took off instantly – selling 20,000 units within the first hour of launch.
Business continued to boom for Maxx, and sugar-lovers couldn’t get enough of his seriously sour treats.
Flavor collaborations with GHOST, retail deals, and plenty more industry madness followed, which caught the attention of a certain candy juggernaut.
In November 2024, The Hershey Company completed its acquisition of Sour Strips, adding the sour candy brand to an already impressive portfolio that includes Reese’s, Rolo, Kisses, York Peppermint Patties, and, of course, Hershey’s.

At the time of the acquisition, Maxx described the deal as a “life-changing amount of money” but remained tight-lipped about the exact figure.
However, thanks to Hershey’s 2024 annual report, we now know the number – $75.5 million.
A hefty price tag, but one that cements Sour Strips as one of the most successful independent candy brands in recent years.
Why Did Maxx Chewning Sell Sour Strips Candy Hershey?
The Hershey Group might have acquired 100% of Sour Strips, but Maxx Chewning isn’t walking away anytime soon.
Despite cashing in on a major deal, he’s still involved in the day-to-day operations and insists the sale wasn’t just about the money.
For him, it was about turning Sour Strips into a legacy brand in the candy world.
Talking about the decision on his YouTube channel, he said: “When I sold the company, I actually chose to stay on. Technically, I don’t have to. But I want to, because I want to be here first-hand, seeing the brand grow into what I know it can be.
“Now, it’s even better because we’ve got the power of Hershey behind us. Sour Strips was already blowing up, and now we can pour the Hershey rocket fuel on it.”
