The Enhanced Games are set to take place at Resorts World in Las Vegas on 24 May, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the most talked about competitions of the year.
And now that the athletes have been announced the excitement is really starting to build, as fans around the world are finding out who’s taking the potentially bold step of getting involved with the games.
One of the names on that list is weightlifter Arley Mendez, and if you haven’t come across him before, here are 3 things you should know about him.
Arley Mendez was born in Cuba and now represents Chile
Arley Mendez was born in Cuba, but left to start a new life in Chile, choosing to stay there following a competition trip.
He made the move back in 2013 and started training with the guidance of the Chilean Olympic Committee. After years of frustration at not being able to compete, Mendez was finally granted Chilean citizenship in 2017.
He’s since gone on to score some pretty impressive wins while representing his new country.
He’s already a world champion
In 2017, not long after being declared a Chilean citizen, he swept all three gold medals in the men’s 85 kg division at the World Championships for Chile, finishing ahead of Olympic champion Kianoush Rostami.
In 2018, he moved into the 89 kg category and won gold in the snatch at that year’s World Championships, and he later went on to represent Chile at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
More recently, he picked up silver in the men’s 89 kg event at the 2024 Pan American Weightlifting Championships, so he goes into the Enhanced Games with a load of high level results already behind him.
He’s built a reputation as a seriously strong snatcher
One of the things that stands out about Arley Mendez is how quick he is in the snatch. His technique has been described as incredibly fast and efficient, with some coaches even comparing his fixation speed to a boxer’s jab.
