As a three-time Olympian and one of Ireland’s most decorated swimmers, Shane Ryan’s next big challenge will come in the form of May’s Enhaned Games

Here are 3 facts you might not know about the record-breaker.

1) He grew up in America

Shane Ryan was born on 27 January, 1994 in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, to American parents with Irish heritage.

Shane’s talent developed through the American system, and he progressed to become a standout collegiate swimmer at Penn State, where he set multiple school records in sprint freestyle and backstroke events and won a hatful of conference titles.

He made his way through the ranks and eventually broke into the American national squad – but then he made a huge life decision.

His first major global competition for Ireland was the biggest of them all – the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, where he competed in the 100m backstroke.

Ryan advanced from the heats and reached the semifinal, ultimately finishing 16th overall.

3) He is an Olympian and Irish record-breaker

Ryan represented Ireland at 3 consecutive Olympic Games – Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021), and Paris 2024 – becoming the first Irish male swimmer ever to achieve that feat.

Ryan rewrote the history of Irish swimming, setting national long-course records in the 50m and 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, and 50m butterfly, and multiple short-course records across freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly.
