Onyx has always been one of Gymshark’s most limited and coveted collections. That much was made abundantly clear once again during the staggered V5 drop.
The website was overwhelmed, fans flooded the streets around various stores, and bots were out in full force.
As is the case with any collection, there’s always one piece that tops the lot. The crown jewel that trumps everything else.
In this instance, it’s the Onyx Hoodie. It’s been a decade since Gymshark last released the lesser-spotted pullover, but it’s finally back for another run.
Here’s everything you need to know, including details on what’s coming, when it’s dropping, and how you can be in with a shot of securing gymwear heritage.
Onyx Hoodie: The Comeback Story
The iconic Onyx Hoodie returns in four colourways, one of them not yet seen in V5:
- Athletic Purple
- Carmine Red
- Light Grey
- Onyx Grey
As an added sweetener, Gymshark is also releasing the short-sleeve, long-sleeve and tank in Athletic Purple.
When is it Dropping?
If you are signed up to Gymshark’s loyalty scheme, your support is being rewarded. Members get early access between 4-5pm GMT and 12-1pm EDT on 26th March, and 3-4am AEDT on 27th March.

General release is set at 7pm GMT and 3pm EDT on 26th March, and 6am AEDT on 27th March. Online queues open two hours before.
It’s not too late to sign up to the brand’s loyalty programme. Doing so will boost your chances of success in what’s set to be another extremely in-demand release.
Will the Onyx Hoodie be in Stores?
If you’re a loyalty member, you can access Onyx at select stores from 9am. Those stocking the precious threads are London’s Bond Street and Regent Street hubs, and Amsterdam’s flagship Kalverstraat.
For those local (or willing to travel), it will be the first glimpse of the shiny new Onyx Hoodie.
What’s Gymshark Doing About Bots?
Bots have been the bane of the entire Onyx V5 release. Almost immediately after every drop, resellers have posted Onyx listings at extremely inflated prices, looking to cash in on the community’s desperation to secure a top.
Gymshark has posted the following statement addressing the issue: “Our message is clear; Onyx is for our community, not bots.
“This time round we added a queuing system, item limits and additional checkout security measures to prevent bots orders, whilst ensuring we get Onyx into the hands of as many of our community as possible.”
To give everyone the best chance of snagging the Onyx Hoodie, all orders will be limited to one of each item per size.
That means you could get one hoodie, short sleeve, long sleeve and tank top in the same order – although that would require some fairly substantial luck.
Tips For Maximising Your Success
If you’re a real fan, not a bot, with a track record of failure in previous Onyx drops, here are some tips to maximise your success:
- Make sure your app is the most up to date version via the App Store ahead of launch on Thursday.
- Join the queue early. Nobody likes hanging around for two hours, but some things are worth waiting for.
- Hold tight and avoid refreshing your page, as that could drop you to the back of the queue.
- Once you’re in, don’t close the queue page. Doing so could kick you out completely.
It’s also worth noting that buy now, pay later options like Klarna, Afterpay, PayPal Pay in 3 and Mollie will not be available sitewide from 4pm-8pm GMT.
You’ll need a card at the ready to cop the Onyx Hoodie.
Will Onyx Restock?
Gymshark has been crystal clear on this one, “Once it’s gone, it’s gone.”
Take that with a pinch of salt, of course, as Onyx V5 has reappeared (albeit in different forms) after a similar message several times already.
What is the Onyx Collection?
Gymshark Onyx is dubbed “the collection that maximises the physique you’ve earned.”
The OG first dropped in 2016, V2 in 2017, Imperial in 2018, then Onyx X in 2020. After that, Gymshark took a break and went back to the lab with David Laid.
Now, six years on, it’s back with the signature heavy-duty compression fits, powerful silhouettes and raised 3D logo.
The Onyx Hoodie hasn’t been seen since the very first iteration, meaning this round is going to go – and fast.
