The Sinocare iCan i3 CGM

My Honest Sinocare iCan i3 CGM Review

From workouts to late dinners, how real-time glucose monitoring with the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM shapes daily decisions

Blood sugar is one of those health topics we hear about constantly, yet few of us genuinely understand. We’re warned about foods that “spike” it, told to keep it “stable”, and nudged towards smarter choices.

But what any of that actually looks like inside the body is often a mystery. For anyone living with diabetes, blood sugar is less of an abstract concept and more a daily reality, learned through necessity rather than choice.

For the rest of us, understanding tends to come from vaguer signals. In other words, how we feel.

In my world, blood sugar only really crosses my radar after intense exercise. A long run, a football match, a brutal HIIT session.

If I miss the refuelling window, my blood sugar is soon brought into sharp focus, courtesy of that starry-eyed, sweaty, on-the-verge-of-keeling-over feeling that’s practically impossible to ignore.

So when the opportunity came up to review the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM, I figured: why not?

Full disclaimer: I’m not diabetic, and this is not intended as advice for anyone managing a chronic condition.

There are some fantastic creators out there who live with diabetes, use Sinocare devices, and are far more equipped to talk about the subject than I am.

Instead, my review is through the lens of an everyday athlete and gym-goer, testing a continuous glucose monitoring device to understand more about the impact of diet and exercise on blood sugar.

With that in mind, here’s my full and honest Sinocare iCan i3 CGM review, complete with tips on how to save 15% with code GYMF15.

Introducing Sinocare

Unless you’re managing diabetes daily, or know someone in your immediate circle who is, chances are you won’t have heard much about Sinocare.

Certainly, they weren’t a brand heavily on my radar prior to this review. But after doing some research, I felt slightly ignorant.

The high-tech operator employs biosensing technology to develop, produce, and sell a wide range of rapid diagnostic test products for chronic diseases.

Specialising in diabetes, Sinocare’s range caters to both chronic disease patients and healthcare professionals.

Born in China, the brand is now the leading blood glucose monitoring expert in its homeland across retail, e-commerce, and healthcare, and has gone on to establish a dominant presence globally.

Across finger-prick test kits, CGMs, uric acid monitors, blood pressure monitors, and more, Sinocare’s products are manufactured across nine different sites and used by over 25 million people in 187 regions worldwide. Hence why I felt ignorant.

What is the iCan i3 CGM?

Continuous glucose monitors like the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM were developed to revolutionise diabetes management.

Rather than relying on frequent finger pricks, these monitors provide real-time, continuous glucose data around the clock, revealing patterns and offering timely alerts for highs and lows.

The concept is all about empowerment — giving people the data to make faster, better-informed decisions while developing a deeper understanding of how food, exercise, and stress affect blood sugar.

That final point is where my interest in the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM really comes in. While the device is primarily designed for people with diabetes (which I’m not), there’s clear application beyond that group.

Blood sugar that’s either too high or too low can negatively affect anyone, so understanding how certain foods, training splits, and workloads influence your glucose curve feels genuinely useful.

The device itself utilises cutting-edge sensor technology to provide precise and reliable glucose readings.

Equipped with third-generation technology, it promises more stable and accurate results, alongside protection against oxygen and external impurities interfering with measurements.

The sensor is compact — just 32mm in diameter and 5.7mm thick — and delivers up to 15 days of data, taking a reading every three minutes.

Across its lifespan, the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM performs an impressive total of 7,160 measurements.

As for reliability, the device returned a MARD value of 8.71% in clinical testing, placing it among the best CGMs on the market.

In layman’s terms, MARD indicates how closely a device’s glucose readings match a reference (lab-grade or finger-prick), on average.

There are caveats, of course, but that’s a topic for an entirely separate article. Independent studies have also been conducted on the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM’s accuracy, for those keen to dig deeper.

Readings are delivered via an accompanying app (which we’ll come to shortly) and the no-prick application method offers a far less invasive approach to blood glucose monitoring.

My Sinocare iCan i3 CGM Review

To keep this Sinocare iCan i3 CGM review as clear and digestible as possible, I’ve broken my thoughts down into five categories:

  • Ease of application
  • Results
  • Practicality
  • Accuracy
  • Value for money

Without further ado, let’s dive in.

Ease of Application

I’ll admit, my first glance at the instructions was a little daunting. The leaflet unfolds into a sprawling spread that looks more like a treasure map than a how-to guide.

That initial concern quickly faded once I realised the size was largely due to the sheer number of languages included.

The Sinocare iCan i3 CGM comes in two main components: the sensor pack and the transmitter pack, with the former arriving in neat, sterile packaging.

Step one is downloading the app, which guides you through several helpful videos covering setup and pairing with the transmitter.

Even with the videos, the process is still ever so slightly fiddly.

You need to pair the sensor pack with the applicator by lining them up, pressing down firmly on a hard surface, and unlocking a blue dial on top.

That dial is conveniently positioned next to a large white button you’re not supposed to press until you’re ready for insertion, no matter how tempting it looks.

Still, it wasn’t particularly painful and took around 10 minutes in total, which I suspect was largely down to me being a complete CGM novice.

If you asked me to do it again, I’m confident I could set everything up in less than half the time.

Once you’ve chosen where it’s going to sit — and, crucially, cleaned the area with alcohol wipes — the rest is pain-free.

I was expecting a slight stabbing sensation from the needle, but to my surprise there wasn’t one. All you feel is a mild thud from the spring-loaded mechanism hitting your stomach.

There’s no visible piercing of the skin, no blood, and nothing likely to unsettle you if you’re a bit squeamish.

The final step is gently lifting the applicator away and smoothing down the adhesive pad. Sinocare recommends placing the monitor on your stomach for optimal and safest results, which suited me just fine.

All in all, the application process was relatively seamless — if slightly finicky.

Results

The sensor itself takes around two hours to warm up. During that period, you won’t receive any data through the app.

In my case, it felt like it took a little longer. The first batch of readings appeared unusually low, but things soon levelled out once the sensor was fully operational.

From that point onwards, I was genuinely impressed by the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM. Readings are presented in multiple formats, making it easier to interpret what’s actually happening beneath the surface.

Better still, the app includes plenty of built-in resources to help you understand natural trends and what high, low, or “normal” readings really look like.

After eating, you can watch your blood sugar rise as food breaks down into glucose, before plateauing as insulin does its job.

Once you start to grasp the finer details, the data becomes genuinely useful for shaping your routine and tuning into your body.

I’m notorious for skipping breakfast in favour of extra time in bed. With real-time feedback, I could see just how close to the lower threshold my blood sugar was on certain mornings — enough to prompt me to fuel up properly.

Likewise, I could see when my lunch simply wasn’t sufficient to carry me through to dinner without levels dipping.

This was made even easier by in-app alerts, which trigger whenever readings drop below your chosen threshold.

Beyond being a fascinating insight into your body’s inner workings, the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM encourages experimentation.

My In-App Blood Glucose Readings

One afternoon, I followed a light lunchtime run with a crumpet smothered in jam and butter. I could see in real time how my blood sugar dipped post-exercise before being rapidly elevated by the simple carbohydrates.

As an aside, it also gave me a clear picture of how a high-sugar meal with little nutritional value might affect my blood sugar without prior exercise.

That may sound obvious, but it lands differently when the numbers are laid out in front of you.

You can also view averages across multiple days, including how much time you’ve spent below or above the “healthy” range.

For me, that average was 4.5 mmol/L, with 66% of my time spent in range — a figure likely influenced by the initial setup readings.

Aside from that early blip, I have no real complaints about the results and, as I say, was mightily impressed.

Practicality

The Sinocare iCan i3 CGM is dust-proof and waterproof, and can be worn for up to two hours at a maximum depth of 2.5 metres while swimming or bathing.

Unless you’re deep-sea diving, you’re unlikely to test those limits. Initially, I was cautious, avoiding movements that might disturb the adhesive.

Before long, though, I completely forgot I was wearing it. Across showers, baths, workouts, and frequent outfit changes, I had no issues at all.

The Sinocare iCan i3 CGM in Place

When it came time to remove it, the adhesive was still firmly in place, aside from a small nick that I suspect came from scratching it in my sleep.

Would I wear one during a full-contact sport like rugby? Probably not. But for everyday life and training, practicality isn’t an issue.

Accuracy

Most people using the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM to manage diabetes will cross-check readings against finger-prick tests.

As established, I didn’t do that, so I had to take the data largely at face value. Beyond the initial warm-up period, nothing looked out of place.

My blood sugar dropped as meals approached, rose afterwards, and levelled out exactly as you’d expect within two hours or so. Low readings were typically accompanied by hunger cues, which added confidence to the data.

That’s not definitive proof of perfect accuracy, but for my use case, I felt confident in the information provided.

If complete accuracy is critical for you, finger-prick comparisons are always an option.

Value for Money

At full price, the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM costs £52, with a pack of two reducing the price to £49 per monitor.

I’m no CGM expert, but that strikes me as strong value for 15 days of 24/7 monitoring. And if you’re not diabetic, you’re extremely unlikely to need one every fortnight.

My experience with the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM was overwhelmingly positive.

Used strategically, it allows you to shape what you eat, when you eat, and how you refuel after different training demands.

Late-night dinners throwing things off? Bring meals forward. Feeling light-headed after a tough HYROX session? See exactly what gets you back into range, and fast.

For me, that was a crumpet with jam. For you, it might be a Lucozade Sport or a piece of fruit to tide you over until you can make something more substantial.

Even outside training, it’s useful during holidays or periods of heavy overtime, when routines tend to slip.

What the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM ultimately gave me was confidence in clarity — an assurance in understanding patterns, both good and bad.

I’m not suggesting non-diabetics should wear one continuously. But if you want to genuinely understand your blood sugar and where you might be going wrong, it’s an invaluable tool.

So, would I buy the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM again?

Absolutely. This review was a great introduction, but there’s still plenty more to learn.

And with the Sinocare iCan i3 CGM by my side — or rather, on my stomach — I’m confident I can build routines that work for me.

If you want to try it yourself, you can save 15% using code GYMF15 at checkout. Head to Sinocare’s website to get started.
