Serbia is mourning the loss of their very own Lazar Dukic who tragically passed away during the 2024 CrossFit Games on Thursday 22nd August. The event happened during Individual Event 1 at Marine Creek Lake in Fort Worth, Texas.
According to reports, the 28-year-old Serbian disappeared during the last lap of his swim and just a hundred metres from the finish line. The organizers of the CrossFit games noticed this and alarmed the Fort Worth Fire Department, who turned in a dive team and after about an hour retrieved his body.
After formally announcing his death, the organizers suspended other events for the day. Unfortunately, thirteen out of the eighty initial athletes pulled out of the competition.
Lazar was a seasoned CrossFit athlete who had previously participated in the games for two consecutive years. As a result, it is very unlikely to assume the competition stress was too much for him.
Initially set with a modest target of $200,000 (£157,000), a crowdfunding campaign established to support the family of the late Lazar has exceeded expectations, amassing a total of over $310,000 as of press time.
His death has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit CrossFit community. Athletes, coaches, and fans alike are paying tribute to the young athlete, celebrating his contribution to the sport, kindness, humor and unwavering support for others.
